Parliamentarians round table conference against Torture
The United Nations International Day in Support of Victims of Torture is an international observance held annually on 26 June to speak out against the crime of torture and to honour and support victims and survivors throughout the world.
Green Draft Consultancy and Justice Project Pakistan in collaboration with PCHR commemorated the message of the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture through “A Parliamentarians’ Roundtable on *Criminalising Torture* in Islamabad.
At the meeting, headed by HRCP Council Member, Mr. Farhatullah Babar said that the prohibition of torture is absolute under all circumstances. Neither a state of war, nor political instability nor an order of superior authority is any defense against torture. Victims of torture have the right to compensation and rehabilitation. All incidents of torture must be investigated, and the perpetrators brought to justice.
Executive Director Parliamentarians Commission for Human Rights (PCHR) Chaudhry Shafeeq was also present at the meeting and said that torture is absolutely prohibited in international law. Pakistan is a state party to various human rights instruments, which should explicitly ban torture and call for its absolute prohibition in all its forms and in all circumstances.
